About LearnInfoSecWith.me

Welcome!

Hi, I’m Joel. I’m a tech professional and I find myself drawn to infosec/cyber security. So Idecided to jump right in. I’m a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). A few years ago, I had to justify the creation of an infosec team for my former product. Once hired, I eliminated organizational hurdles for them throughout their existance all the while explaining the value they bring. As I’ve been studying infosec, I’ve found that I’ve been doing some form of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and a little bit of Social Engineering my whole career. So now I’m doing a deep dive into infosec.

The State of Affairs

As I write this in the Fall of 2023, Russia’s war in the Ukraine grinds on. A dead Yvgeny Prigohzen is almost a household name in the US, while his Wagner Group most certainly is. Even so, the 2024 US elections promise to bring more cyber mayhem from the likes of Prigohzen’s proteges. He was a player in Russia’s disinformation campaing to interrupt the 2016 US elections.

China’s state hackers are going to continue to try to steal intellectual property rights from companies worldwide and North Korea’s state hackers are going to continue to steal money. Phishing, spear phishing, and other social engineering strategies are going to be continue to be effective as people become the easiest thing to hack.

As more and more households add “smart” devices to their homes, IOT (smart lightbulbs, smart switches, wireless cameras, Alexa, Google Home, NEST thermostats, etc.) is going to be a way in for blackhat hackers. Cars, especially Teslas, are simply software platforms with actuators and motors. Many of today’s AI platforms are built with open source software in their software supply chain that isn’t as secure as it could be. So there’s lots of ways for bad actors to act.

Clearly, there’s a lot going on and a lot to learn. Join me while I figure infosec things out for myself. Perhaps I can point out a thing or two you’ll find useful.
